Is Bipolar Disorder Destroying Your Loved One Does someone in you life exhibit extreme mood changes swinging from depressed to over active? Do they engage in risky behavior or extreme monetary indiscretion that they would not normally engage in? If left undetected Bipolar Disorder can cause extreme harm in people’s lives and the possibility of hospitalization or even death. When the sufferer sees no way out and they “just don’t want to feel the pain any longer”, many of them turn to the abuse of drugs, sex, gambling or smoking. They want to “numb the pain” so bad that they turn to anything for temporary relief. There is hope and with the help of a qualified psychiatrist and the proper diagnosis these individuals can improve their life and enjoy a better quality of life. There are many things people can do to stop or lessen the pain and mood swings that come with Bipolar Disorder. Some things that can help are, proper medication, exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy, discontinuing the use of mood altering substances and support groups. Each individual must go through their own process and heal in their own way. The proper use of medications is crucial to ones success. The following journal entry is one person’s experience and life struggle with Bipolar disorder. Hopefully you will gain some insight into the disease and the pain and struggles that come with it. “Dear Bipolar Disorder, Do you know that you have totally damaged me? I hate you. I never asked for you to be in my life and I don’t want you. You cause me hardship, pain, anxiety and suffering. You have done extreme damage to my family life and my undeserving family. You have been a huge detriment to my self esteem. This has been so damaging in my life and it has spread throughout all areas of my life, you have left no stone uncovered. This has damaged my relationships with family, friends and strangers. You lead me to believe that there are positive aspects of Bipolar Disorder in my life. The manic stages can feel so good, almost like a drug. Why must you tease me with the manic stages when all along you know that all they are going to do is send me into depression, the next day or even the next week I hate how you drag me down for no apparent reason and then limit me to sleeping for 24 hours straight. I do not like the fact that you cause me to be unproductive and lower my self esteem. I often feel like a dumb or insignificant person. I buy into all the crappie negative tapes that you run thru my head. I am sometimes a worse parent than I know I could be if I didn’t have you in my life. You encourage me to get angry at my family and be very short with them. I take my negative attitudes and behaviors out on my family and it is hurting them in ways that I thought I would never ever repeat because I know that they are very destructive to the people around me. Because of you I need more sleep than the average person (8-9 hours per night) and I can’t drastically alter my sleeping schedule without possible negative side effects. Because of you I need more “down time” than most people need. I can’t be as productive as a “normal” person because you are present in my life. I am less motivated than I would like to be. I feel like I get less done than my piers. I have limitations and restraints that other people don’t have. I have less focus and concentration than most. I hate the idea but, I will probably need to take medications for the rest of my life.” Bipolar Disorder is a confusing and sometimes unmanageable disease. This disorder causes tremendous pain and suffering in people’s life until it is identified and dealt with. Unfortunately we will always have people in this world that live their life undiagnosed and suffer the consequences. The hope is that this article can help to save the life of one person or many, many people.
