For almost many computer software applications users need accurate time reference in their systems and it is a fundamental requirement. Although, there is an internal clock in every computer the user must ensure that the clock provides correct date and accurate time in regular interval. This is essential as the internal clock in the computers are made of oscillators which are notorious for being slow down every time with few minutes and as a result after some time it shows huge difference between the local time and in its internal clock. So if the user has some critical applications, the computer must be synchronized with a highly accurate external reference source. The internal clock in the personal computers never designed for perfect timing. Since they are produced in mass number they use low cost oscillators to maintain accurate time. For some users the accurate time may not be essential but for others accurate time is essential. So in order to maintain the accurate timing there are several external references that could provide accurate time to the computers. Here are some ideas from which the computers can get accurate time. Computer networks need to work with synchronized time base and this is essential. If there is no external reference, the systems internal clock will drift each day and that may be from few seconds to few minutes per day. After a period the time shown by the computer is inaccurate which may create huge problem when it has to deal with the transaction processing. This problem it the computers can be solved by introducing the network time protocol. The use of NTP protocol helps distributing accurate time from highly precise time servers to network time clients. Almost all the modern operating systems are able to synchronize the time with an NTP server. The operating systems only require the IP address or the domain name of Stratum 1 or Stratum2 NTP servers. There are many operating systems like the UNIX, LINUX, Microsoft Windows XP/2000/2003 and the Vista system are able to use the NTP application from various sources to get accurate timing. For standalone computers which don’t have access to internet can use alternative methods to get accurate time. Such systems can get access from national radio time reference that is transmitted free to air. But the major drawback of the radio time is that it has only finite transmission range. But the best way for the users would be to have the GPS satellite based universal navigation system where they can get accurate timing.
