If there is yeast present, the doctor will expect to see a specific pattern under the microscope. Once this is done, the doctor may place one or two fingers into the vagina and press lightly on the uterus and other regions to check for tenderness or various other abnormalities.

In addition to this, the doctor will normally get both blood and urine samples from the patient. It is also very important that women not have sex two days before the test, because if they do, this will make the diagnosis much more difficult for the doctor to make. For most healthy adults and children, the doctor can generally look at the skin or mouth to determine if a yeast infection is present. If the doctor is not certain as to the cause of the symptoms, they may scrape certain areas of the body to get more relevant information.

The doctor also may take flakes of skin from the body via a scalpel, and they will combine this with potassium hydroxide on a slide. When the doctor looks under the microscope, if they notice branches that do not have either walls or structures, this is a sign that the fungus they are looking at is more than likely Candida, which is the heart of a yeast infection. Most yeast infections are not serious conditions, and can be treated without a great deal of trouble once a diagnosis has been made for them.
