Time Synchronization For PCs

By: MarkWilliams

The global navigation system, GPS system is maintained by the United States military. In this system there are 24 earth orbiting satellites that are used to provide the precise time and positioning information across the world. in order to time synchronize for the computer you must know more about the GPS system and how its equipments work to provide the GPS time reference.

On each of the 24 earth orbiting GPS satellites has highly accurate atomic clock onboard to provide the real time. The clock onboard these satellites use a triangulation technique to calculate the precise positioning. The clock can also be used for the precise computer time synchronization applications.

The positioning and timing data is continuously transmitted by the GPS satellites. Anyone can get the time and position information through the GPS satellites provided he has to use a GPS receiver and antenna. The GPS system works in all weather condition and in any part of the world. Again to get the time and position information you have to only spend for the equipments and there are no subscription fees. For this reason many computer and network time synchronization systems like the NTP servers use the GPS as an accurate external timing reference. The GPS receivers are designed in a way to get the accurate positioning information which may be accurate better than 10m. The timing synchronization which you get through this is accurate to a resolution of few nanoseconds.

The radio signals that is transmitted by the GPS system from the satellites is very weak power with bands L1 and L2. The band L1 is designated as the civilian GPS which is transmitted at 1575.42MHz. This signal travels through a straight line and can pass through plastic, glass and clouds but it can not pass metals and brick. The later signal L2 is designated for the military GPS.

In order to get the signals correctly you have to use the GPS antenna and a receiver. The antenna should place in the view of sky to get the signals easily. It would be better to place the antenna on the roof top at 360 degree view of the sky. If it is not possible then you can place it near the window at 180 degree view of the sky. The antenna is connected with the receiver through coax cable. The GPS antennas work as amplifiers in order to boost the signals transmission by the satellites. The cable distance between the GPS antenna and the receiver is critical and must be at right position and not less than 55m.
